Friday Donuts

Last year my grandma loaned me her copy of Paula Deen’s memoirs. I have to say the book was kind of nutty, but there was one little tidbit in there that has been worth its weight in gold.

She shared how to make donuts from canned biscuits.

I know, it’s too good to be true!

I have shared this on Facebook before, but I realize I haven’t shared it here. Or maybe I have and I just forgot. Either way, I made the donuts today for the kids. They are always a hit!

You need three things:
1. A can of the small biscuits that come ten to a pack, usually grouped in a pack of four tubes. You know what I’m talking about. (Don’t be tempted by the larger biscuits; they won’t get cooked in the middle and you will be so, so sad.)
2.Some canola or vegetable oil, a cup to a cup and a half.
3. Sugar. I use powdered sugar or a cinnamon and sugar mix. Or a little of both.

You want about an inch of oil in your pan. Heat it on medium until it is hot. You can put the handle of a wooden spoon in the oil to test for readiness. When little bubble appear around the handle you are ready to go.

While your oil is heating you’ll want to prep the biscuits.

Just poke a little hole in the middle of each one and shape into a ring.

Drop a few at a time into the oil, and flip over after about a minute. If the bottoms are dark brown or burned then your oil is too hot.

Once they are done, take them out of the oil and place on a plate lined with paper towels.

Take a large freezer bag and put in about 1/2 cup of powdered sugar, or a mix of 1/2 cup granulated sugar with 1 tsp of cinnamon. Put in four or five biscuits at a time and shake, shake, shake!

The kids have been obsessed with The Princess and the Frog lately and the movie’s heroine, Tiana, makes beignets in the movie. She drizzled hers with honey and then sprinkled on the sugar. Sam has been insisting for days that I make him some beignets (mostly so he could use the sugar shaker), so we made a few Tiana-style donuts today.

We liked the old way better, but it was a fun experiment.

These are great and easy to make. I’ve even made them for breakfast with company with a fruit salad and scrambled eggs. And it’s fun for your kids to help shape the donuts and shake the bag.

Let me know if you give these a try!

We made them before Jay outgrew his food allergies since some brands of canned biscuits have no milk or eggs. (Usually the cheap-o store brands!) I had forgotten how much I liked them … maybe that can be breakfast tomorrow!

I made donut holes like this when I was younger! Just cut the biscuit into 4 sections, roll them in a ball and cook and shake the same way! (I used the fry daddy for mine)! Thanks for the memory and the reminder!!

Whoa Girl! Your donuts look marvelous!! I have to tell you my dear sweet husband brought these donuts to our family. He learned the trick from his mom and the girls have always loved them. I believe Lindsey has made them, too.
